A Video Op-Ed Series created by Jeffrey Abelson

In a different format than his usual Chairman's Forum, Dana Gioia speaks directly here in a Video Op-Ed discussing the findings of the NEA's extensive research reports on reading. Namely, the more people read, the more involved they become in their communities, and the more engaged they become as citizens. Gioia explains that reading helps develop one's inner life which in turn opens one's eyes to the inner lives of others, building empathy and a desire to connect and care. As such, he observes that reading is a basic building block of democracy.

"Song Of A Citizen" is an innovative series of Video Op-Eds for the Internet created by documentary filmmaker Jeffrey Abelson. Using a compelling visual style, it features an array of nationally renowned political philosophers, poets, historians, university presidents, journalists, and civic engagement experts—talking to fellow Americans in a rousing new media way about the vital role of the citizen in democracy today.
