American Masterpieces: Musical Theater

5th Avenue Theatre Association

To support a production of West Side Story, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with accompanying outreach and educational activities. Associate artistic director William Berry will direct the production in collaboration with Seattle's Spectrum Dance Theatre led by Donald Byrd.

Arden Theatre Company

To support a production of Leonard Bernstein's Candide with accompanying educational and outreach activities. Originally adapted by Hugh Wheeler from Voltaire's 1759 novel, a new musical version, with book by John Daird, lyrics by Richard Wilbur, and additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Leonard Bernstein, will be directed by producing artistic director Terence J. Nolen.

Arizona Theatre Company

To support a full-scale production of the 1924 jazz-age musical Lady, Be Good! with score by George and Ira Gershwin and book by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson. Artistic director David Ira Goldstein will direct performances in Tucson and Phoenix as part of the theater's 40th-anniversary season.

Guthrie Theater Foundation (aka Guthrie Theater)

To support a production of the musical play 1776, with book by Peter Stone and music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, with accompanying educational activities. Associate artistic director John Miller-Stephany will direct the Guthrie's first musical production in its new three-stage theater complex.

To support the re-creation and production of Delusion of the Fury, a Japanese Noh-influenced musical theater work by the late composer/theorist Harry Partch, with educational activities. Director John Jesurun will create the production with musical director and choreographer Dean Drummond.

Lyric Stage, Inc.

To support a production of Carousel performed with a full orchestra. Lyric Stage will produce Carousel, by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein, with Don Walker's original and restored orchestrations.

Music Theatre of Wichita, Inc. (aka Music Theatre of Wichita)

To support a production of Damn Yankees, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and libretto by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, directed by Mark Madama. The classic American musical will include educational activities as well as training opportunities for young Midwesterners.

North Shore Community Arts Foundation, Inc. (aka North Shore Music Theatre)

To support a production of Show Boat, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and music by Jerome Kern. Accompanying educational activities will explore the show's place as the first modern American musical.

To support a concert-hall staging of Porgy and Bess with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and Heyward. Educational and outreach activities accompanying the production will include a community forum, free concerts for young people, and a composers symposium.

Pasadena Playhouse State Theatre of California, Inc. (aka Pasadena Playhouse)

To support the premiere production of a new adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Can Can. Writer/director David Lee and writer Joel Fields will adapt the original version, with book by Abe Burrows and music by Cole Porter, to appeal to contemporary audiences.

San Jose Children's Musical Theater (aka Children's Musical Theater San Jose)
San Jose, CA

To support the production of a classic contemporary musical with educational activities, theatrical training, and performance experience for young artists. In partnership with the San Jose Youth Symphony, artistic director and choreographer Kevin R. Hauge will stage a production of Leonard Bernstein's Candide based on the 1973 revival by director/producer Harold Prince.

To support a production of Carousel by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein. Accompanying outreach activities will include free panel discussions on the topic of domestic violence and its portrayal in the musical and free tickets for all area domestic violence counselors and their clients in order to promote healthy dialogue around the issue.

To support a production and tour of Little Shop of Horrors to underserved audiences including prisons and homeless shelters. Artistic director Michelle Hensley will direct and produce the musical with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken.

Village Theatre

To support a production of the rock opera The Who's Tommy directed by associate artistic director Brian Yorkey. The work will be produced at the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in Issaquah followed by a tour to the Everett Performing Arts Center.

Vivian Beaumont Theater, Inc. (aka Lincoln Center Theater)
New York, NY

To support the production of South Pacific at the Lincoln Center Theater. Director Bartlett Sher will direct the first Broadway revival of South Pacific with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein, and book by Joshua Logan.

Zachary Scott Theater Center

To support the production of Caroline, or Change with accompanying education and outreach activities. Artistic director Dave Steakley will direct Caroline, or Change by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori with choreography by Robin Lewis and music direction by Emmy Award-winner Allen Robertson.
