Beyond Glory
With Operation Homecoming: Beyond Glory, the National Endowment for the Arts extended its Operation Homecoming initiative to tour the acclaimed one-man play Beyond Glory. Adapted, directed, and performed by Stephen Lang, it was presented free of charge to troops and their families at more than twenty overseas and domestic military installations beginning in April 2005. Through Beyond Glory, Lang brought to the stage the personal accounts of American servicemen who have been honored for their heroic deeds.
Stephen Lang's riveting theatrical adaptation of Larry Smith's book, Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Heroes in Their Own Words, featurs first-person accounts of those who received one of our nation's highest military distinctions. In his noteworthy production, Lang presents the stories of eight veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, including Admiral James Stockdale and Senator Daniel Inouye.

As part of Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, Lang performed excerpts from Beyond Glory on military bases in connection with writing workshops for the troops and their families. By presenting the military audiences of today with the recollections of decorated veterans, the Operation Homecoming tour of Beyond Glory encouraged service men and women to preserve the stories of their own wartime experiences.
Stephen Lang's impressive career in television, film, and stage includes the portrayal General George Pickett in the movie Gettysburg and Stonewall Jackson in the movie Gods and Generals. In 1990, he was honored with a Helen Hayes award for playing Colonel Jessep in the play A Few Good Men. Please see Mr. Lang's biography.
The tour of Beyond Glory was made possible through the generous support of The Boeing Company.
