Missoula Writing Collaborative
Missoula, Montana, is noted both for its literary community and its wilderness setting. The city—the second largest in the state—is the county seat for Missoula County, whose population is approximately 109,000.
The Missoula Writing Collaborative is partnering with the Missoula County Public Schools on a two-year community creative writing project, Writing Lives. Creative writing instruction will focus on the role of wilderness and its role in shaping a local, shared identity for Missoulans. During the project period, the Missoula Writing Collaborative will collaborate with local environmental not-for-profits, naturalists, and artists to lead workshops in fourth-grade classes at nine public schools as well as out-of-school venues including Talbot Youth Homes, Flagship After-School Program, the Native American Club, and senior citizen centers identified in collaboration with Missoula Aging Services. The project will culminate in an anthology publication, a documentary film, and community-wide readings and public broadcasts of the youth's writing.
